Bitcoin ETFs in Canada

4 pieces · 3 tracker entries · 4 companies

Canada listed the world's first spot bitcoin ETF in February 2021, years before the United States, and the Toronto Stock Exchange now carries several. For a Canadian the question is rarely whether an ETF exists; it is whether the ETF in a TFSA beats coins in a wallet you control, and what each costs. This page gathers the comparison, the tax angle and the history.

Fees, custodians and assets under management change; every figure in the coverage carries the fund's own published date.

Questions people ask

Which bitcoin ETFs trade in Canada?
Spot bitcoin ETFs listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange from Purpose, CI Galaxy, Evolve, Fidelity, 3iQ and others. The comparison piece lists each fund's ticker, management fee and custodian as published by the issuer.
Can I put a bitcoin ETF in my TFSA?
Yes. A TSX-listed ETF is a qualified investment for a TFSA or RRSP, so gains inside the account are sheltered. Holding coins directly in a registered account is not allowed.
Is an ETF safer than holding bitcoin myself?
It removes the risk of losing your keys and adds the fund's custodian and management fee. It does not remove market risk, and you cannot move the bitcoin out of the fund. Which trade-off suits you depends on how much you hold and how long.
